I was born and raised in Virginia. I was always interested in art and liked working with my hands. I built my first chair when I was seventeen. I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1985 with a Bachelor in Fine Arts.
I have continued making art along my journey, but I have also made a point of working with other artists to learn from their skills and knowledge so that I might better understand the world around me.
Along the way, I practiced an internship with Taylor and Boody Organ Builders who build beautiful manual tracker pipe organs. I also learned everything I know about bronze casting by apprenticing at Bronzecraft Foundry with my friend and foundry owner Robert Bricker.
I spent two years in New York City assisting the artist Craig McPherson as he worked on a mural commission project called Harbors of the World. I learned a lot about painting from Craig as well as from spending countless hours at museums and galleries all over the city.
I spent three years building and installing large public sculptures for Brower Hatcher and Mid Ocean Studio as well as working and teaching at a great place called The Steel Yard –a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people learn new skills in the world of metal arts and crafts.
My wife and I live on a forty-eight acre farm just fifteen minutes from Providence, Rhode Island called Hurricane Hill. We raise a relatively rare breed of sheep called Leicester Longwools. We live in a great old house that was built around 1750. In addition to farming and art making, I have a metal fabrication business called Hurricane Hill Fabrication. I work with other artists helping them realize their own art. I also design and build projects for a variety of applications.
In everything I do, I see art and think about art.
